Moving Targets

Boston's answer to Hüsker Dü. Moving Targets were a great punk trio who wrote catchy jams that were both forceful and melodic. Kenny Chambers wrote some great fucking songs and is one hell of a guitar player. Drummer Pat Brady is a total madman behind the kit and he hits just as hard as Chuck Buscuits and Bill Stevenson but with twice the finesse. Moving Targets influenced all the big Boston bands, from The Lemonheads to Dinosaur Jr. Lou Giordano produced both these records at Fort Apache studios and they still sound great today. If you like The Doughboys, All, Mission Of Burma and Hüsker Dü then you'll love Moving Targets.

Bullet LaVolta - The Gift

One of the best Boston bands you've probably never heard of. Both Clay Tarver from Chavez and Kenny Chambers from Moving Targets (both guitar) cut their teeth in Bullet LaVolta. The Gift sounds like Black Flag, Naked Raygun, Motorhead and Dag Nasty all mixed together and was produced by Paul Q. Kolderie. Kenny and Clay just fucking wail all over this album. This was released on Taang! Records in American and Sub Pop in Europe. The band were close friends with the Lemonheads and toured Europe together in 1989, also Clay Tarver and the Lemonheads's Jesse Peretz were Harvard roommates. This album is long out of print and fucking amazing so grab this shit up.

Girl Talk - All Day

Whenever my family would go on trips/long car rides my Dad would always blast music, mostly Creedence and Phil Collins, but for one fleeting moment during the summer of 1989 all he played was his Jive Bunny cassette. Jive Bunny was two DJs who took swing, jazz and early rock, spliced them together into a cohesive song and held it all together with synthesized beats. When I hear Girl Talk all I can think of is Jive Bunny, It is Jive Bunny for hipsters. That being said I can't get enough of the man's work. It is so much fun to listen to that you'd have to be a real doucher to not like this. All Day is instant party starter and you'll be knee deep in gash if you bump this shit during your next soiree. REAL TALK.

Thrush Hermit

Thrush Hermit hailed from the fertile scene of Halifax, NS in the early 90's, a scene that produced both Sloan and Eric's Trip. Like Sloan, Thrush Hermit had three distinct singer/songwriters each contributing material, which made each release a grab-bag of influences. Beatles harmonies, grunge guitars, 70's glam, power-pop and punk rock all mixed together into one rad sound. The Smart Bomb EP has my two favourite songs by the band, "Hated It" and "French Inhale", two of the best alternative songs to ever come out of Canada. Sweet Homewrecker was their US major label debut that failed to launch them into the stratosphere, which is a shame because it is a great album full of rock stompers and power-pop bangers. They have another full-length and several EP's that are worth checking out (and can be posted by me if anyone is interested) but these are my two favourite releases.

Smoke Or Fire - The Speakeasy

Their new one, more great gruff (both in sound and appearance) and melodic punk from these RVA lifers. This is their first album with Gwomper from Avail playing bass and Ryan Parrish from Darkest Hour behind the drum kit. These guys put on a great live show and I hope I'll be able to see them again some time.

REV 150: Past/Present

I remember when this compilation was announced like 4 years ago, and it has finally now been released. Modern(?) hardcore bands covering Revelation Records classics. A good chunk of the bands on here have broken-up, but whatever this thing is cool. Just close your eyes and pretend its 2006 and people still care about Down To Nothing and Set Your Goals. Ambitions' Bold cover is the best thing on here, but you really can't go wrong with classic Rev releases (they are classics for a reason).

The Lemonheads

The Lemonheads formed in Boston, MA in 1983 by friends Evan Dando, Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz while they were all still in high-school. In the beginning they played a style of punk rock that sat somewhere in between Hüsker Dü and The Descendents, but as the band progressed they added more and more of a pop-sheen to their music. The first two albums are raw, angry and melodic, and some of the best indie rock to ever come out of Boston (Dinosaur Jr were from Amherst). Since Evan Dando is the only original member in the Lemonheads nowadays, I think a lot of people forget that in the beginning Ben Deily was responsible for writing half the songs (and most of the good ones). The core of Jesse, Ben and Evan lasted three albums, then Ben quit after the album Lick. Jesse stuck around for one more album, Lovey, before quitting (he went on to a lucrative career directing music videos, his most famous one being for the Foo Fighters' song "Big Me"). The albums Lick and Lovey pre-date grunge but bear all the hallmarks of the genre: metal-tinged pop songs rooted in punk rock. Corey Loog Brennan from Bullet LaVolta played lead guitar on Lick and Lovey, and he wails all over those two albums. After Jesse's departure Evan flew to Australia to write with some friends, and then recorded their most popular album It's A Shame About Ray. The follow-up album Come On Feel The Lemonheads contained their highest charting song, "Into Your Arms", that went number one right after Nirvana's "Heart-shaped Box" and before Pearl Jam's "Daughter". Evan put the band on hiatus after releaseing the album Car Button Cloth (which featured the drumming of Emmett Jefferson Patrick "Murph" Murphy III of Dinosaur Jr fame), a hiatus that would last nearly ten years. For those ten years Evan just did mountains of drugs and not much else. In 2005 Evan wrote some Lemonheads songs, signed to Vagrant Records and recruited Bill Stevenson and Karl Alvarez of Descendents/All fame to back him up and record the self-titled album. J. Mascis also contributed some of his signature guitar leads to the album, which was one of 2006's biggest surprises for me. Every album is great, but If I had start somewhere I would recommend Creator first, It's just got great timeless pop songs with a real punk rock edge.

As an added bonus here is the bands cover of The New Kids On The Block song "Step By Step", get it here.

Superchunk - Majesty Shredding

Their new album, and first since 2001's Here's To Shutting Up. This definitely sounds like classic early 90's Superchunk and I couldn't be happier. This is the most punk sounding album the band has released since Here's Where The Strings Come In 15 years ago. If this doesn't bring a smile to your face you're fucking hopeless and I don't want to know you.

OFF! - First EP

OFF! is Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steve McDonald (Red Kross) and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless, Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt) playing old-school hardcore. The four songs on here all clock in at under one minute and all totally slay. This is just the first of four planned 7" singles that will be compiled into a box set later this month. This EP is fucking awesome. Keith's old buddy Raymond Pettibon (Black Flag, SST records) even does the artwork.

Maserati - Pyramid Of The Moon

This is the new single from Maserati, and its a pretty fucking rad song. This was one of the last songs written by drummer Jerry Fuchs before he plummeted to his death down an elevator shaft last November. This song wouldn't sound out of place in a 1980's action/cop movie. This epic jam was recorded during the sessions for their forthcoming album "Pyramid Of The Sun" which will be out later this year. Until then dime this shit and imagine some rad car chases, explosions and seizure-inducing jump-cuts.
